Thanks for the question.  In Islam a nonbeliever is the person who does not accept Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final Messenger and the Prophet of Allah, does not accept Qur’an as the book of Allah and does not accept Islam as the way of life from Allah.
According to holy Qur’an, Jews and Christians are people of the book but they are not believers of Islam.  There are four kinds of non-believers.  Among those four types of nonbelievers Jews and Christians have special status in Islam but they are still nonbelievers. Four types of nonbelievers are;

  1. A polytheist (MUSHRIK) who worships the creation of Allah like idols, sun, moon, animals, humans, etc.. OR associates partners with Allah in worshiping Allah.
  2. An imposter (MUNAFIQ) who pretends to be a Muslim but at heart the person is not Muslim. This person may look like Muslim, pray like a Muslim but he knows he is trying to deceive Muslims and he/she is not a Muslim.
  3. An atheist or agnostic who does not believe in God (Allah) and denies the existence of Allah.
  4. Jews, Christians and Sabis believe in one God (Allah) but they do not accept Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the final Messenger and the Prophet of Allah, does not accept Qur’an as the book of Allah and does not accept Islam as the way of life from Allah.  This category also includes anyone who does not believe in the finality of Prophet-hood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
