Assalamualikum. Me and my wife got married three years ago in our naive country in south asia. Like most other south asian families, my wife got a lot of gold ornaments as gifts. However, the gold ornaments are not in the possession of us rather they are kept in the bank account of our parents. Now, we have moved to North America for higher studies. While calculating zakat if we add the value of gold then the amount becomes high compared to the salary we get as graduate students. My question is do we have to include the value of gold that is not in our possession while calculating zakat or can we pay zakat based on the savings we have here in USA/Canada? Thank you
