Calgary Police and RCMP Open Hate Crime Investigation

(Calgary)  Calgary Police and the RCMP have started an investigation against an Alberta man for sending hateful and threatening emails to Imam Syed Soharwardy, the founder of Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and Muslims Against Terrorism.  The same man had threatened Imam Soharwardy in the past. Police had warned him not to contact Imam Soharwardy but after two years he started sending extremely hateful and threatening emails again.
It seems that the Alberta man was motivated by the US Congressman Peter King’s recent anti-Muslim hearings in Washington D.C.
Imam Soharwardy has condemned these threats. “We must not allow hate in our society. This is not a freedom of speech case.  It is hate-mongering. All Canadians should be treated equally.  If such emails would have been sent to any other religious leader or a religious group, it would have been a different situation. But I hope police will do the right thing”, said Imam Soharwardy.
Today, March 18, 2011 at 1:00 PM Imam Soharwardy will be holding a press conference at the Magnolia Banquet Hall, 900 – 5075 Falconridge Blvd. N.E. Calgary.
