Grand Opening of First Muslim Women Centre in Calgary

Islamic Association of Canadian Women will be opening its first women’s centre in Calgary today. Rahmah Women’s Centre is located at 421 Riverfront Avenue, SE, Calgary, downtown.  This project is the first of its kind in Canada which is initiated and operated by Muslim women of Calgary.

At the Rahmah Women’s Centre, women facing domestic violence, racism and discrimination will be able to get help. “Our goal is to provide shelter to new immigrant women who are abused or facing violence at home. The establishment of shelter will take some time but as a first step we are starting our counselling and educational services for new immigrant women immediately”, Sumaiya Zaman, the spokesperson for IACW said today.

“We are thankful to our spiritual leader Imam Syed Soharwardy for his vision and guidance. The idea of Muslim women centre is in fact Imam Soharwardy’s idea. He is also planning to launch a similar project in Mississauga, Ontario”, Sumaiya Zaman said.

On Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 5:00 PM Teresa Woo-Paw, MLA and several other representatives of women NGOs in Calgary will be attending the opening program at 421 Riverfront Avenue, SE, T2G 0B1, downtown Calgary.  Everyone welcome.
